Although PLO Chairman Yasir Arafat has always told us that the Palestinian
Revolution will always be his first and only wife and will be dedicating
his entire life, the revolution has been in bed with the Central
Intelligence Agency probably since its birth, with his knowledge and
approval! We, Palestinians, have been working for the Central Intelligence
Agency for at least 25 years and we did not know it!
That is no excuse! How na=EFve we have been! We were stupid then and we
may be stupid now. Nothing seems to have changed! On the contrary, the
situation may have worsened. In the past, our leadership's collaboration
with foreign intelligence was covert. Today, cooperation with the CIA and
even the Israeli Mossad is carried out in the open and during daylight
hours. Nothing is left for interpretation or the imagination anymore! The
CIA ties to our Palestine Liberation Organization headed by our
"revolutionary" Chairman Yasir Arafat go back to 1973 and possibly much
earlier.
In a March 5, 1998 New York Times article titled "CIA Is Teaching Tricks of
the Trade To the Palestinians", Tim Weiner wrote: "The Central Intelligence
Agency has been training the security forces of the Palestinian Authority
in the arts of espionage, information-gathering, interrogation and
techniques of the trade, United States Government officials say". The CIA
ties to the Palestinian services go back 25 years. "In 1973, Yasir Arafat
sent an emissary to meet with an American envoy, Vernon Walters, then the
Deputy Director of Central Intelligence, to discuss how to 'prevent radical
assaults on the early peace process' between Arabs and Israelis, according
to the memoirs of Henry A. Kissinger, the former Secretary of State."
The emissary that Arafat chose for that highly sensitive job was Ali Hassan
Salameh, the secretary chief of Fatah, the largest Palestinian guerilla
faction, which the PLO Chairman had established. Despite his "repentant"
and change of conduct, later in 1979, Mr. Salameh was assassinated by the
Israeli Mossad for his role in masterminding the Munich Olympics guerilla
operation. Until he was killed by a booby-trapped Volkswagen parked in West
Beirut, Mr. Salameh provided the United States and its allies with vital
tips about the activities of radical Palestinian groups.
