ZAGREB, Tuesday -- Croatian President Franjo Tudjman's medical attendants
reported today that the improvement in the ailing president's health reported
at the weekend had been maintained.

A statement signed by physician Branimir Jaksic said that from a surgical
perspective Tudjman's recovery was normal and that he had been being treated
for the past sixteen days for peritonitis.

This was the first formal statement on Tudjman's health in the past 48 hours.
The Zagreb press has been rife with speculation since the end of last week
that the president, who has been fighting a battle against colon cancer for
three years, was clinically dead and being kept on life-support machines
while arrangements for his succession were made."
