Irish in Norway Accuse Newspaper of Racism

The Irish in Norway Internet Community has reported the Norwegian daily
Dagbladet to the Norwegian Press Council for racism and demanded that
the paper publish an open and unconditional apology.

The Community is reacting to an article in Dagbladet on November 24th
where sports journalist Tom Stalsberg describes Roy Keane's back pass
which led to the Fiorentina's first goal in their 2-0 win against
Manchester United. "For some Irish reason or other he tries a hopeless
back pass which is snapped up on the 16 meter line by Gabriel Omar
Batistuta." In the same the game Norwegian fullback Henning Berg made a
similar mistake which Stalsberg gracefully describes as "unfortunate".

A spokesperson for the Community described Stalberg's comment as
"disgraceful and more worthy of the English gutter press than a
publication which prides describes itself on being in the best Norwegian
liberal tradition."

"The Irish community in Britain have fought long and hard to eradicate
this kind of anti-Irish racism in the English media. There is no way we
are going to accept this in the Norwegian press."

"We are making a special appeal to the Irish internet community to
contact the Dagbladet editor at <harald.stanghelle@dagbladet.no> and
make your feelings on this matter known."
